What is your focus?

We recently drove to Gainesville to visit our son.  On the way there, we quickly realized it is Love Bug Season (for those who are not familiar, these are bugs who live long enough to mate and then die attached to each other.  I DO NOT think this is romantic in any way!).

Once on the highway, splat-splat-splat, those acidic little bugs got all over the front of the car and the windshield.  When I say, “All over,” I mean ALL OVER!!!  Thousands of them!  They get into every grate and gap.  If one should try to run the wiper/washer, streaks of bug remains will arch from one end of the windshield to the other (trust me, I know).  They do not rinse off well and are notoriously difficult to remove (there is even a special Love Bug Remover one can buy to help get them off).  They COVERED the windshield so all that could be seen were the schmutzy blotches and arches left by the splats.

While driving, if looking at an individual splat, one could easily get distracted and lose focus of the big picture-the road, the other cars, the driving conditions, etc.  If trying to look beyond the splats to the big picture, one could easily get distracted and lose focus of the smaller picture-the speedometer, the car in front, next to or behind.

When we arrived at our destination, we went into one of those automatic car washes and did a temporary fix on our windshield.  On the way back we had the same Love Bug experience.  We knew that upon our return, we would take the car in to one of those car wash places that has the Love Bug cleaner and would get all those gooky bug body parts and acidic schmutz off of our car.

The Lord spoke to my spirit while we were driving.  It is easy to get distracted from what G-d wants from us.  Sometimes, if we concentrate on the miniscule stuff we lose focus on the important picture-what G-d is doing in our lives, our families, our synagogue, those around us.  If we try looking too far beyond ourselves, to the humungous picture-stopping world hunger, the political arena, world peace, we can lose focus on those things that are most important to us and to G-d.

Balance is the key to life.  Concentrate!  Do not become easily distracted!  Focus on G-d first, family next, our synagogue, and then work, the community, the nation and the world.

Love and blessings,

Shari
