BeShalach "When he let go"
30 JAN 2010
Exodus 13:17-17:16
Judges 4:4-5:31
John 6:22-40
Pharaoh finally sends out the children of Israel. They
depart from Egypt and head out from Succoth to camp at Etham. It is there
that the pillar of cloud (G-d), went before them to lead the way.
Meanwhile, back at the palace, Pharaoh changes his mind. He
gathers his chariots and pursues Israel. At the Sea of Reeds (Red Sea) the
people panic as they see Pharaoh and his army approaching. G-d assures
them that they will never see the army of Egypt again. G-d splits the sea
and the children of Israel cross to the other side where they see the
power of G-d envelope Pharaoh’s army and they sing the Song of Miriam.
This “song” is the first recorded song in the Bible and is
a pattern for true worship. It emphasizes the L-rd G-d, who He is, and
what He has done for His people. He spares His people (15:1-10). He
guides them to their inheritance (15:11-13). His Name is glorified (vv.
14-17). He reigns forever (v 18).
Today, let G-d be your strength and your song (15:2; Psalm
118:14, Isaiah 12:2). Singing is an important part of our walk with G-d.
It enables us to praise Him and be a witness to others.
