Chayei Sarah
19 NOV 2011
Genesis 23:1-25:18
1 Kings 1:1-31
1 Corinthians 15:50-57

In this Parasha we begin by reading that Sarah has died at the age of 127 and is buried. We further read that Abraham mourned for his wife, and after buying land and the cave of Machpeilah from Ephron the Hittite  in Genesis 23:1-20, he placed her remains there.

In reading about Sarah (from the previous Parasha and from reading in Hebrews 11:1-3, 1 Peter 3:6) we find her to be a Woman of Faith. Also, we find from our readings, about her love for her son and that she would have gladly been happy to have more children.

Though not written at the time of her life, we do read in Proverbs 17:6, Psalm 127:3, 128:3, that children are the crown of old men, and the glory of children is their father’s.

Among Jewish parents, a customary saying is, “You have created a home filled with love and laughter, integrity and learning, compassion and generosity.  Your home remains a loving environment within Jewish traditions and dedicated to peace, hope and respect, love for all people.  You have devoted yourselves to your family with tenderness.  Your blessings have made your children’s hearts full of confidence, trust and joy.  May you continue to bestow your family one of life's greatest treasures, the ability to share love.”

As Sarah gave her love to her family, may we follow her example to care for and love our family, and raise our children as she did.  In the next generation, the next patriarch and matriarch, if Messiah tarries, shall come.  Continue the love and caring and nurturing to raise Godly children who will follow our example to love our GOD, our family, with all their hearts.
