G-d’s Attributes of Mercy
In chapter 34 we
have the revelation of G-d’s attributes of mercy, given after He forgave
the golden calf incident, even though there were consequences involved
(3000 died).
G-d’s glory
(32:18-23) is the manifestation of all His attributes and character,
everything that He is and says and does. Everything about G-d is
glorious. The highest activity of man is to glorify G-d (Matt 5:16; 1 Cor
10:31).
We have
previously read in Scripture about G-d’s dwelling places, where He walked
with man (Gen 5:24). Further, G-d desires to dwell with us (Ex 25:8; Heb
8:1-2). The glory of the Most High came to the Tabernacle to dwell (Ex
40:34). But when Israel sinned, the glory departed (1Sam 4:21-22 the
first time; Ezekiel 11:22-23 the second time).
Ex 34:1-9, tells
us that G-d is gracious. Because He is gracious and longsuffering (2
Peter 3:9), G-d gave His people another opportunity to dwell with Him. He
does this with us today (1John 2:1-2).
Our experience of
glory today is explained in 2 Cor 3:18. We all, with open face, beholding
as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from
glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
Be Changed!
