Vayeshev

20 DEC 2008

Genesis 37:1-40:23

Amos 2:6-3:8

Zecharia 2:14-4:7

Acts 7:9-16

“And Yaacov settled in the land of his father’s sojourning.” Genesis 37:1

Scholars see this as a seeming ambiguity, that Yaacov finally sought to settle down, to rest from his life of tzoorus (troubles) and afflictions.  The righteous enjoy no rest in this world.  The ultimate rest and reward awaits them in the time to come.  The work of the righteous is never done.

Israel has been given two tasks.  We need to accept G-d’s word for ourselves, and act in order to inform the world of the sovereignty of the G-d of Israel.
